Abstract

1304744 Cathode materials and processing GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 29 May 1970 [12 June 1969] 25982/70 Heading H1D A thermionic cathode is formed by allowing molten cathode forming material to ascend a refractory material tube by capillary action and solidifying the liquid. A porous cathode comprising a core of ThC or ThC and W within a W-Re alloy tube is formed by placing the tube vertically or at an angle in powdered Th and WC, heating by R.F. current in vacuum to form W and ThC liquid mixture, cooling and cutting the tube into short sections. Alternatively, the tube is dropped into already molten core material when an equal molar mixture of ThC and W is required. The end of the tube may be remelted by electron bombardment to form a spherical end. ThC intermetallic compounds and pure refractory metals may be used as core material.
