Abstract

840,582. Coating by vapour deposition. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 10, 1958 [March 13, 1957], No. 7613/58. Class 82(2) [Also in Groups XXII and XL(a)] An apparatus for producing tritiumsaturated titanium powder comprises a titanium wire 17 supported by nickel supply leads in a discharge vessel 16 which is connected through a cooler 18 and a cock 19 to a vacuum pump (not shown). A number of vessels 20 closed by seals 21 associated with a puncturing ball 22 each contain a zirconium plate 23 saturated with tritium, or alternatively may be filled with gaseous tritium. A further number of vessels, closed by seals 24, contain argon. The vessel 16 is degassed, calcined if necessary, and then filled with argon at a pressure of 10 cm. of mercury by breaking one of the seals 24. The wire 17 is vaporized so that a layer of titanium is deposited on the wall of the vessel 16. One of the seals 21 is then broken and either the tritium contained in a zirconium plate 23 driven off by heating or. the gaseous tritium is admitted to the vessel 16 where is is absorbed by the titanium layer. The absorption may be promoted by heating. Alternatively the tritium may be admitted to the discharge vessel 16 at the same time as the argon. The vessel 16 is then cut off at 25 from the rest of the system and the layer of vaporized metal exposed to air, the powder which is not entirely saturated with tritium thus becoming inactive. Subsequently the vessel is washed with butylacetate in which nitrocellulose is later dissolved. The suspension thus obained is placed in an electric discharge tube (see Group XL(a)) and is sintered to a support during heat treatment of the tube. Electrons emitted by the tritium serve to reduce the ignition delay of the tube in operation.
