Abstract
1,070,268. Gettering; ion pumps. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 4, 1965 [Aug. 27, 1964], No. 33419/65. Heading H1D. A getter vaporizer comprises two or more wires of getter material having a diameter of the order of or slightly greater than d and a single wire of a refractory metal having a diameter less than d wound along a length of refractory filament of diameter d. The preferred getter material is titanium but other metals or alloys may be used, e.g. zirconium, uranium, aluminium, alkaline or alkaline earth metals. The refractory metal may be molybdenum or columbium and the refractory filament tungsten or tantalum. A number of individually energizable and replaceable vaporizers are mounted in a cartridge (Fig. 1, not shown) sealed to the housing of a vacuum pump which may be an ion pump.
