Abstract
376,220. Discharge apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE LAMP CO., Bloomfield, New Jersey, U.S. A.-(Assignees of Thomas, C. H.J.) Dec. 29, 1930, No. 38992. Convention date. Dec. 28, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 39 (i).] In a discharge device such as a lamp or X-ray tube, the positive ion bombardment is concentrated on a small surface of an electrode so as to heat it to a temperature of thermionic emission, and the electrode is made of a thermionic refractory metal such as thorium, uranium, zirconium or titanium. One or both electrodes of a lamp is hollow and formed by drilling a hole 7 in a block 3 of thorium. The exterior surface may be oxidized to form an insulating coating 8, or a coating of oxide of zirconium, aluminium or magnesium may be applied, so as to confine the discharge to the recess ; or an electrode of zirconium or titanium may have an external coating of thorium oxide. In another electrode, thorium is coated on or alloyed with the hollowed-out part of a tungsten or tantalum block. The lamp may be of the positive column type. The filling may be neon at a pressure of 10À3 mms. Dimensions of the electrodes and lamps are given.
