Abstract
530,176. Discharge lamps ; electrode materials. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRICAL INTERNATIONAL CO. June 20, 1939, No. 17928. Convention date, June 24, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] Electrodes for discharge devices, especially high pressure mercury-vapour lamps, consist of a core of a highly emissive metal in metallic form surrounded by a screen of refractory metal with openings for the passage of electrons. The core is preferably of thorium, but uranium, zirconium, hafnium, titanium, rhodium, ruthenium, vanadium, ytterbium or iridium may be employed. Fig. 2 shows a core 9 of thorium carried on a lead 8 and surrounded by a tungsten helix 10. Fig. 4 shows a core 9 supported by a looped wire 14 attached to a cross-bar 13 on the lead 8. The screen consists of two co-axial tungsten helices 10, 12. The electrode may be used in a lamp having a mercury vapour filling with argon at a starting pressure of 20 mm. or neon at 100 mm.
