Abstract

994,151. Cathode materials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 5, 1962 [March 8, 1961], No. 8435/62. Heading H1D. A cathode for a thermionic valve or other electric discharge tube comprises a metal cathode body 2 carrying outermost an emissive barium-activated alkaline earth metal oxide 4, and interposed therebetween, a substratum layer 3 of oxidic alkaline earth metal compounds containing barium and, in addition, a reducing agent which releases barium from the oxidic compounds in the operation of the valve. The emissive layer 4 preferably consists of strontium oxide or a mixed oxide of barium and strontium, the substratum layer 3 of a double or triple alkaline earth metal oxide with titanium hydride (e.g. 3% by weight) as a reducing agent and the cathode body 2 of electrolytic nickel or cobalt. In manufacture, the two layers are sprayed on until layer 3 is 60Á thick and layer 4 is 20Á thick. Specification 929,002 is referred to.
