Abstract

1,045,269. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 13, 1962], No. 34970/62. Heading H1D. Mercury is introduced into a discharge tube from a glass capsule containing a mixture of chemical compounds which will react together to evolve mercury at a temperature below the softening point of the glass of the capsule, whereby heating of the latter causes its rupture by, and the escape of, the contained mercury. A compressed pellet of a mercury compound, a reducing agent, and a moderator-e.g. mercuric oxide, titanium powder, and iron powder-is sealed into the glass capsule under vacuum or in argon. The capsule is mounted in the tube, the latter is sealed off, and the capsule heated either by a tungsten resistance coil (Fig. 1, not shown), or by eddy current heating of metal plates by which the capsule is mounted.
