Abstract

581,329. Metal-vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 31, 1943, No. 8708. Convention date, May 30, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] In electric discharge devices of the kind having a mercury vapour atmosphere the envelope is principally of metal and the source of the mercury is an amalgam, such as cadmium or tin, which is contained in a metal tubulation whose temperature is maintained indedent of that of the discharge chamber. As applied to a discharge device as described in Specification 562,178, the amalgam is contained in a metal tube 46, Fig. 1, supported from the header 12 of the discharge envelope by means of a glass seal 54. The tube is fitted with a vaned copper radiator 48 soldered to it, and is welded to the cathode heater lead 31. The amalgam is preferably in finely divided form, and a nickel screen 60 is provided to prevent spilling when the tube is tilted.
