460,954. Electric discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 14, 1936, No. 22417. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electric discharge device comprises a tubular vitreous envelope 1 closed at one end, or at each end, by a plate 3 of ceramic material abutting against a flange 2 on the envelope and sealed or cemented thereto, and one or more leading-in conductors 4 passing through the ceramic plate to the electrodes of the device. In the example glass solder 5 is provided to make an air-tight joint between the ceramic plate 3 and the leading-in wire 4 to a cylindrical sheet-metal electrode 6. The lead 4 serves to support the eleatrode 6 and hold it equidistantly from the wall and lower end of the envelope. Wires 8 at the other end of the electrode terminate in glass beads 7 which bear against the wall of the envelope. If the ceramic plate and vitreous envelope have substantially the same coefficient of expansion they may be sealed together directly at the flange 2. Alternatively they may be secured together by glass solder. Specification 418,867 is referred to.
