Abstract
478,368. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RYDE, J. W. (Patent-Treuhand Ges. f³r Electrische Gl³hlampen) July 21, 1936, Nos. 20178/36 and 13132/37. [Class 39 (i)] In the manufacture of discharge devices of the kind in which the distance between the electrodes has to be adj u s t e d accurately, such as the high pressure lamp shown, a leading-in conductor 2 carrying an electrode 1 is provided with an arm 4 ending in a face 5 spaced at the desired inter-electrode distance from the electrode 1, and during sealing the other electrode 1<1> is kept in contact with face 5, the arm being finally removed from the neighbourhood of the electrodes. The electrode 1 may be sealed in the quartz envelope 7 before or after the electrode 1<1>. The arm may be of glass sealed to the bead 3, when it may be broken off by a wire 11 passing through the exhaust tube. If the arm is of metal it may merely be bent aside and may then act at a starting electrode. Absolute contact of the face 5 and electrode 11 is not necessary, as greater accuracy may be obtainable by leaving a gap so that light can just be seen between them. A dome 13 collects matter evaporated from the electrodes.
