Abstract

456,608. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Patent - Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) Sept. 6, 1935, No. 24877. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure discharge lamp, i.e. one in which the vapour pressure in operation reaches 10 .atmospheres or more, of the type having an approximately spherical envelope, the diameter of which is considerably greater than the distance between the electrodes, is provided with a dome-shaped projection to receive deposits which might interfere with the emission of light. The diameter of this projection is greater than the distance between the electrodes, which does not greatly exceed the distance of either of them from the envelope. The Figures show such a lamp with an envelope of about 30 mm. diameter filled with neon at a pressure of about 5 mm. and containing a quantity of mercury which is all evaporated in operation. The domeshaped projection 6 is covered with a reflecting layer 12 or an asbestos lagging and other projecting parts, such as those surrounding the leads, are similarly coated. The projection 6 may be prolonged nearly to the electrodes as shown by the dotted lines 11. The light to be used issues through a portion 7 of the envelope which may be protected by a partition 8 with an opening 10; the remainder of the envelope, particularly the part opposite the portion 7, may be silvered.
