Abstract

835,183. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 2, 1958 [May 7, 1957], No. 14082/58. Class 39(1). A low pressure mercury vapour discharge tube 1 of circular cross-section, which in operation has a lowest outer wall temperature of from 30‹C. to 45‹C. and a wall load exceeding 50mWs per cm<SP>2</SP>, has means for achieving the said lowest wall temperature at the said load comprising at least one extension 5 of the wall projecting outwardly from the tube and containing mercury 6, the extension being disposed between the tube electrodes 4 in the middle portion of the tube, and having a radial dimension which exceeds 20% of the outer tube radius. The extension can be dome-shaped, and can be annular as at 7, encircling the tube throughout its circumference. The outer tube diameter can be about 38 mms., the height of the dome can be about 10 mms. and the width of the dome about 11 mms. The gas filling may be neon at a pressure of 1À5 mms. or argon at a pressure of 0À8 mm. or 1 mm. at. room temperature. The tube can be provided with a layer of fluorescent halogen phosphate having a colour temperature of about 4200‹C.
