Abstract
841,343. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 9, 1957], No. 31817/58. Addition to 835,183. Class 39(1). A low pressure mercury vapour discharge tube 1, preferably fluorescent, which in operation has a lowest external wall temperature of from 30‹C to 45‹C and a wall loading exceeding 50 mWs. per sq. cm., comprises at least one wall extension 5 intermediate the alkalineearth activated thermionic electrodes 4 and containing mercury 6, the radial size of the extension exceeding 20% of the radius of the tube and each electrode being surrounded by a chrome-iron disintegration screen ring 8, which is insulated from it. The screens 8 can contain from 15 to 35% by weight of chromium, preferably 24%. The extension 5 may be annular as indicated at 7. The rings 8 are supported from the pinches 2 by stay wires 9. The tube can have a filling of argon at approximately 0À8 mms. pressure and the wall loading can be approximately 74 mWs. per sq. cm., the temperature of the tip of the extension 5 being approximately 38‹C. The tube 1 can be provided with a layer of luminescent halogen phosphate with a colour temperature of about 4200‹C.
