Abstract
434,276. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and SCOTT, W. J., 16, Oval Road, Hillmorton Paddox, Rugby. Jan. 29, 1934, No. 2985. [Class 39 (i)] In vapour discharge lamps having main electrodes operating alternately as anode and cathode, particularly double-walled high pressure mercury-vapour lamps, at least one of the electrodes consists of a wire helix of refractory material of high work-function such as tungsten, one portion of the wire being coated with oxide or other material of low work-function and an uncoated portion of the wire extending a short distance into the arc. A tungsten helix 2, Fig. 1, transverse to the axis of the lamp is coated at the parts 3 and has an enlarged uncoated turn 6. In a modification, a helix 2, Fig. 5, coaxial with the lamp has an uncoated end loop 61. This loop may contain a break 8, produced by fusing a thinned part of the loop 6<1> by a large current after exhaustion of the lamp, the lead 9, then acting as starting electrode. The turn 6 or loop 61 may carry a spike or projection of tungsten.
