Abstract

486,066. Metal - vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent- Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) June 24, 1937, No. 17662. [Class 39 (i)] Relates to high pressure metal-vapour discharge lamps in which the electrodes are disposed near the ends of an elongated envelope, usually of quartz and consists in taking the lead to one or each of the electrodes 2 through the side of the envelope 1 approximately perpendicular to its axis and approximately opposite the electrode so as to diminish the overall length of the lamp. Preferably the lead is surrounded by a tube 3 which serves to protect it and to carry a cap or other terminal 11. As shown the tube 3 is wrapped with asbestos 7 and fits into a metal sleeve 8 secured by a clamp 9. The tube 8 is closed by an insulating plug 10 through which the lead 14 passes to the terminal 11. The seal can be made of a quartz tube 4 which is collapsed on to a strip 5 of molybdenum or tungsten which is joined at its inner end to a stouter support 6 for the electrode and at its outer end to the lead 14. Alternatively, intermediate glasses may be used for the seal. The inner surface of the seal is preferably continuous with the inner surface of the envelope near the electrode.
