Abstract
619,721. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., JENKINS, H. G., and MILES, E. E. Dec. 20, 1946, No. 37500. [Class 39 (i)] A positive column discharge lamp of the activated hot-cathode type has within the envelope 1, Fig. 1, a pair of straight glass tubes 2 and 3 each closed at the same end. Within each closed end is an electrode 4, 5, and by connecting them to an A.C. source 9, 10 a U- shaped discharge 11 is produced. The arrangement may be " doubled by having four tubes, Fig. 2 (not shown), or three, in which case two discharge paths have a common electrode. Fig. 3 shows a modification with the discharge taking place between electrodes 17, 18, 19, 20, all connected together and a common electrode 21 facing the open ends of the tubes. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate an embodiment in which the tubes are grouped in a bundle instead of side by side as in Fig. 3. The tubes may have a luminescent coating, and the outer envelope may be translucent. A suitable filling is mercury vapour and argon. According to the Provisional Specification the invention is also applicable to cold-cathode tubes. Specification 465,135 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,984,215 and 2,255,431 are referred to.
