J., 147, Murray Road, and MITCHELL, J. H., 8, Graham Road, both in Rugby. Sept. 10, 1934, No. 25998. [Class 39 (i)] Two parallel arcs or discharges are maintained in series in separate compartments formed by a partition in close contact with the walls of the lamp at one end and not extending fully to the other end. Activated, selfheated cathodes 3 are arranged as shown on opposite sides of a glass partition 2 cemented or sealed to, or in close contact with, the walls 1 but not extending to the top 1<1>. The input leads 6 carry the lower cathodes, and the upper cathodes are connected together by a low-resistance connection 5 and are held by a support fused through the partition 2 or extending from the lower end 4. In exhausting the lamp, the cathodes are heated by induction or arcs, and leads need not be brought out from the upper cathodes. The lamp may be of the type operating with a high-pressure mercury or mercury and cadmium filling and with a low-pressure, rare gas filling and may have an outer envelope evacuated or filled with gas at sufficient pressure to prevent arcing between leads. Alternatively, the lamp 1 may have no outer envelope or may be inserted into a separate Dewar flask.
