Abstract

473,606. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and KNIGHT, H. DE B. April 15, 1936, No. 10853. [Class 39 (i)] In electric discharge devices of the type in which the discharge is initiated by a timed voltage impulse applied to an auxiliary electrode, the latter is isolated in a hermetically sealed tube situated inside the envelope of the discharge device. The starting electrode 15, Fig. 2, is disposed on the inside wall of a part 13 of a tube 11 which dips into the mercury cathode 9 and is isolated from the main part of the tube by a seal 17 so that fracture of the tube 13 does not damage the envelope 8 of the discharge device. A modification is shown in Fig. 3, in which the sealed off part of the tube 11 is of inverted mushroom shape so that the depth of mercury forming the cathode is small in the neighbourhood of the starting electrode 15. The starting electrode may be a band of conducting material painted or sprayed on the inside of the tube 11 or a quantity of mercury. In the latter case, the base of the tube shown in Fig. 3, is thickened to reduce its capacity. Several starting electrodes may be positioned in a discharge device so as to function either in alternation for the purpose of spreading the starting arc, or in parallel, or as spares. In a modification, the outer end of the sealed tube 11 may be supported in an insulating sleeve which is sealed to the envelope and through which the lead to the electrode passes.
