Abstract

559,902. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 2, 1942, No. 13848. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge device comprises an envelope 1 containing a filling of inert gas, a cathode 5 and 6, an anode 8, and a thermionic filamentary cathode 10 for initiating the discharge between the first mentioned cathode and the anode. The latter is surrounded except for its upper end by a glass tube 17. A grid 25 may be provided to control the escape of electrons from cathode 10. A resistance is provided in the connections to cathode 10 to limit the flow of current therethrough and the grid 25 is prevented from operating as a cathode by a high resistance in series therewith. The discharge device may be used in a current operated relay or as a rectifier.
