583,513. Impulse generators. HAINE, M. E., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 31, 1943, No. 5199. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An auxiliary spark gap is arranged in series with a triggerable main spark gap which may be of the type described in Specification 578,510 or a grid controlled gas discharge tube for the purpose of enabling a higher voltage range to be used. In this way the range of a spark gap with a range of ten to twenty kv. may be increased to a range of fifteen to twenty-five kv. The auxiliary gap which is preferably a point to point or point'to plane type may be of the open air type, but is preferably sealed in a glass container containing a gas such as argon with or without a small percentage of oxygen the electrodes may be of tungsten or molybdenum. The electrodes'may be fixed in the container of the main spark gap or of the grid controlled gas discharge tube. As applied to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 578,510 the gap is connected between the junction of the choke and the artificial line serving as a condenser and the cathode of the main triggerable gap. The auxiliary gap may be constituted by forming the lead from the cathode as a point electrode to co-operate with a disc on a short stem connected to the choke.
