Abstract

961,004. Thermionic generators. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 22, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 11549/63. Heading H1D. In a thermionic generator in which the electrodes 1, 2 define the vacuum space, an insulating seal is effected by a single copper packing ring 10 and a ceramic layer 9, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , sintered to at least one electrode. As shown, the electrode 1 is the cathode and is a disc 3 of Al 2 O 3 with a layer 4 of MoSi 2 and supports the active material 5 of LaB 6 . The anode 2 is of copper with a layer 7 of AgO. The ceramic layer 9 is several hundred microns thick, and screws, not shown, clamp the electrodes together. An alternative cathode is of tungsten with an external layer of MoSi 2 and an active layer again of LaB 6 . The vacuum is 10<SP>-6</SP> to 10<SP>-4</SP> mm. Hg. and contains a trace of caesium.
