Abstract
1,044,170. Thermionic valves. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Dec. 23, 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 50775/63. Heading H1D. In an electron tube comprising cylindrical electrodes including cathode 3, control grid 4, screen grid 5 and anode 6, the terminals for the cathode and screen grid comprise projecting metal rings 21, 64, an annular ceramic wafer 63 being sandwiched between the rings to form therewith a by-pass capacitor, the outer diameter of ring 21 being at least as great as that of wafer 63, and the outer diameter of ring 64 being greater to protect wafer 63. As shown, the screen grid 5 comprises a ring of wires extending axially between cap 51 and support rings 59, 60, ring 60 being sealed to, or integral with terminal ring 64. The final tube seal is effected between rings 64, 65 which are of low heat conductivity to prevent conduction of heat to adjacent ceramic-to-metal seals. The control grid wires 4 extend between ceramic cap 45 and support rings 27, 31 which are brazed to four terminal pins 28 sealed in ceramic header 34. The cathode structure includes a ribbed, metal tube 23 which is a press fit within ceramic heater support 7 and a closure 16, which is sealed to cathode cup 13, and to heat dam 19, the latter being sealed to cathode terminal ring 21. The grid caps 45, 51 are secured to the cathode by insulated pin 53, and are such as to minimize undesirable capacitance and increase cathodescreen grid capacitance. The anode 6 is recessed at 75 to reduce stresses caused by differential expansion of the anode and ceramic wall 66.
