Abstract
1,133,943. Thermionic valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 9 March, 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 10252/66. Heading H1D. An anode assembly with high heat dissipation properties for a high frequency electric discharge device comprises a tubular anode sheath 32 having an outer surface portion intermediate its ends joined by a seal 28 to the surface of a bore in an insulating member 24, and a high thermal conductivity anode core 30, at least part of which extends externally of the envelope, which is secured to the sheath by a seal 38 at an end of the sheath adjacent the active anode surface 36. As shown, the upper surface of a flange 34 of the anode core is sealed to the lower surface of the sheath. A gap 40 is provided between the core and the sheath in the region of the coaxial seal 28 to compensate for the different thermal expansion properties of the members. The sheath may extend outwards of the device, Fig. 2 (not shown), to facilitate radio frequency terminal connection. The sheath may be formed of titanium, the core of molybdenum or other refractory metal, and the insulator of forsterite ceramic material. The remainder of the envelope of the device may comprise annular grid and cathode terminals 14, 16 insulated by ceramic spacer 20, and the lower end may be closed by a ceramic header 22 through which the cathode header leads pass. Anode surface 36 is close and parallel to grid 15 and cathode 17. Other anode terminal and sealing arrangements are described, Figs. 3-5 (not shown).
