Abstract
695,441. Discharge apparatus. RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1948 [Sept. 18, 1945], No. 155/48. Class 39(i) A high-voltage discharge envelope comprises a number of metal equally-spaced disc electrodes separated by insulating rings at least three of the electrodes being connected to a high-voltage generator so that the voltage between successive electrodes is the same and a uniform electrostatic field extends throughout the entire cross-sectional area. In an X-ray tube, the uniform field is produced by rings 2, Fig. 1, spaced apart by glass rings 1 and connected to suitable intermediate points of an impulse generator. The ground emitting surface of the hair-pin cathode 10 is located in the plane of a ring 5 which may be at cathode potential or used for focusing or control. A water jacket 16 cools the gold target 15. The rings 2 nearer the target may have thickened internal edges and be made of soft iron; they may also be used for focusing. A focusing electro-magnet 14 may be provided. In another form, a rectifier has a cathode 21, Fig. 7, comprising electrically heated parallel wires, anode 22 and intermediate electrode rings 24 connected to points on a resistance 28. Cooling jackets 25, 26 are provided. Specifications 539,645, [Group XXXV], and 695,539 are referred to.
