Abstract

804,343. Control systems for discharge apparatus. RANK CINTEL, Ltd. March 22, 1955 [March 23, 1954], No. 14386/56. Divided out of 804,342, [Group XL (a)] Class 38 (4). Flash discharge lamp apparatus includes a discharge lamp 13 having main electrodes 4 and 5 between which the main discharge passes in a capillary portion of the lamp envelope, and an auxiliary electrode 10 adjacent the main electrode 5, the arrangement being such that the auxiliary discharge is shielded from the capillary portion of the lamp envelope, means for applying to the main electrodes 4 and 5 voltage pulses of sufficient amplitude to produce a main discharge therebetween and means for maintaining between the main electrode 5 and the auxiliary electrode 10, during periods when the lamp may be required to fire, a small continuous electric discharge. The lamp is constructed as described in Specification 804,342. The small continuous discharge between the electrodes 5 and 10 is produced by the potential between the terminals + and 22 which may be unidirectional or alternating and is preferably applied through a resistor 23. The circuit is preferably arranged so that the potential between electrodes 5 and 10 is greater than that between electrodes 4 and 10 to prevent discharge between the latter electrodes. When lamp 13 is to be flashed ave voltage pulse is applied by way of terminals 19, 20 between grid and cathode of pentode valve 15 so that the valve is cut off to interrupt the flow of current through choke 14 and cause a high-voltage pulse across the choke which is applied to the main electrodes 4 and 5. One end of choke 14 is connected to electrode 4, which is earthed, through capacitor 18 and the other end of the choke is connected to the electrode 5 through a resistor 25 close to the anode of the valve 15 to reduce the generation of high-frequency oscillations. The screen grid of valve 15 is connected to the + ve terminal of the source by a resistor 16 and to the earthed - ve terminal by a capacitor 17. The suppressor grid of the valve is connected to the cathode. To prevent damage in the event of lamp 13 failing to strike or being disconnected, a safety spark gap 21 is connected across choke 14 in series with a resistor 24. Numerical characteristics of a typical circuit are stated.
