Abstract

840,288. Photo-multiplier circuits. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. May 9, 1958 [May 15, 1957], No. 14951/58. Class 40 (3). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (c)] The current multiplication of a secondary emitting electrode in photo-multiplier is monitored by means which compares the current in or before the electrode with the current at a point after the electrode. The resulting signal may be used to maintain the gain constant. The Figure shows a photo-multiplier tube 10 comprising a photo-cathode 11, secondary emitting electrodes 12 and 13 and an anode 14. The voltage across the output anode load 15 and across a resistor 17 in the circuit of the secondary emitting electrode 13 are smoothed in circuits 42, 40, 50, 52 and on the occurrence of pulses at terminals 70, 71, 72, 73 are compared at the grid of a valve 60. The output of this valve is smoothed by a circuit 58, 59 and applied to the grid of a valve 61 in series with the H.T. supply to the multiplier tube. Variations of the ratio between the currents in electrodes 13 and 14 thus vary the supply voltage to the photo-multiplier tube in such a manner as to maintain the ratio and thus the gain of the tube constant. In an alternative circuit (Fig. 4, not shown), the gain of the photo-multiplier tube is controlled by means of a valve connected in series with one of the secondary emitting electrodes lying between electrode 13 and the anode, instead of in series with the main H.T. supply. It is also suggested that the control could be effected at a control electrode other than a secondary emitting electrode.
