Class 38(5) [Also in Group XL(c)] A control device for a power supply unit for an electrode 80 of an electrostatic discharge system for paint spraying, comprises a diode 33 through which passes the current for producing the discharge current between electrodes 80, 81, and in parallel therewith a thyratron 44 having a relay 46 in series with it, the anode voltage of the thyratron being proportional to the diode current. When the diode current reaches a predetermined value, the thyratron strikes and the relay 46 operates, before sparking between the electrodes 80, 81 can occur, and opens contacts 22, deenergizes relay 21 and opens contacts 20 and 16, thus interrupting the supply. Red and green lamps 19 and 17 indicate whether the circuit is closed or open. The -ve. E.H.T. for the electrode 80 is supplied through an L.P. transformer 39, 69 and a rectifier ladder system 72, 75, 78 from an oscillator comprising valves 42, 43.
