Abstract
862,949. Ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1959 [Sept. 12,1958], No. 29027/59. Class 7(4). An ignition system suitable for gas turbines has a condenser 116 which is chargeable by rectified alternating current and is dischargeable across a surface-discharge spark discharge device 118 which is under the control 'of a triode tube 110, the cathode and plate circuit of which tube is connected to the condenser, while the grid is connected to rectified alternating-current through an R-C network 104, 108, the arrangement and electrical characteristics of the components of the system being such that the tube becomes conductive at the same time that the condenser becomes charged to a sufficient potential to cause a spark discharge across the device. As shown the grid derives its potential from a winding 96. The cathode and plate circuit of the triode tube is connected to an R-C network which is formed by a condenser and a resistor and has the same time constant as the other R-C network. The system ensures that the voltage appearing across the sparking plug 118 will always reach the same value at the time that the grid voltage of the tube 110 is of sufficient value to fire the tube. The source of alternating current comprises a battery 10 and vibrator 16 associated with the transformer 52. The triode tube is a thyratron tube.
