Abstract

896,161. Ignition systems. ROTAX Ltd. May 16, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 16862/59. Class 7(4). An ignition system for starting jet engines, gas turbines, furnaces or the like comprises first and second input terminals 3, 5 adapted for connection to a source of direct or rectified alternating current, an induction coil including an iron or other suitable core 1 which will not become saturated in use, a primary winding 2 mounted on the core and having its one end connected to the first terminal 3, a control winding 6 mounted on the core and having its one end connected to the second terminal 5 a transistor 4 having its emitter terminal connected to the second terminal and its collector and base terminals connected to the other ends of the primary and control windings respectively a resistor 8 connected between the base terminal of the transistor and the said other end of the primary winding, a secondary winding 10 mounted on the core, a capacitor 11 connected to the ends of the secondary winding through at least one rectifier but preferably a number of rectifiers 12, a discharge gap 15 adapted to pass current only when the voltage across it exceeds a predetermined value and a pair of output terminals adapted for connection to a sparking plug 17 or the like and connected across the capacitor through the gap. The capacitor 9 could be connected directly across the primary winding or could be replaced by a diode connected across the primary winding. The transistor may be of the PNP or NPN type.
