Abstract
754,508. Ignition systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 30, 1954 [Sept. 30, 1953], No. 25174/54. Class 7(4) [Also in Group XL(a)] An ignition system comprises a sealed two-electrode spark gap 30 and a threeelectrode spark gap assembly 35, 37, 40 (see Group XL(a)) mounted in an insulator casing 10 and provided with three terminal strips 18, 24 and 46. Electrodes 37 and 40 are bridged by an insulator 39 provided with a semi-conductive surface coating, or may be bridged by a resistor of the order of 0.1 to 10 megohms, and electrode 40 is connected to electrode 25 of the control gap 30. Condenser 47 is charged through a rectifier 48 to a voltage sufficient to break down the control gap 30 whereupon condenser 47 partially discharges into condenser 49. The current flowing through the semiconductive surface coating on insulator 39 ionizes the gap between electrodes 37 and 40 which breaks down and ionizes the gap between electrodes 35 and 37 so that the remainder of the charge in condenser 47 is: passed to a surface discharge spark plug 50.
