Abstract

1,176,440. Sparking plugs; ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Nov. 15, 1968 [Dec. 1, 1967], No.54381/68. Heading F1B. A sparking plug has a third electrode 20 which has an end portion 36 arranged to form with the centre electrode 28 a second spark gap, and a resistor 38 connected in series with the third electrode so that a voltage impressed on the sparking plug initiates arcing, in the second gap, which ionizes gas in the main gap. The resistor may be in the form of an annular button. The ignition system may employ a coil having a 30 to 1 turn ratio which delivers about 8 kv.
