Abstract

1459354 Ignition systems GENERAL MOTORS CORP 14 Nov 1974 [23 Nov 1973] 49270/74 Heading F1B An ignition system includes an ignition coil 25 having a secondary winding to primary winding turns ratio selected to provide an ignition spark potential having a predetermined rise time, and an electrical switching device 31 connected in series with the ignition coil primary winding 27 has a metal oxide varistor 60 connected in shunt across it. As shown the electrical switching device 31 is a transistor. The ignition arc may be maintained across each sparking-plug for a time within a range of 700 to 1800 micro-seconds and the ignition coil may have a secondary to primary winding turns ratio within a range of 40:1 to 60:1 inclusive, to provide an ignition spark potential of a rapid rise time within a range of 30 to 45 microseconds. The ignition arc may be maintained across each sparking-plug for a time of the order of 800 micro-seconds and the ignition spark potential may have a rapid rise time of the order of 40 micro-seconds.
