Abstract
1,010,386. Ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 28, 1963 [April 5, 1962], No. 12311/63. Heading F1B. A controlled rectifier 40 is employed to control current flow through a primary winding 34 and the potential of the gate electrode 46 of the controlled rectifier is varied with the aid of a pair of interrupter contacts 16, 18. In Fig. 1 the interrupter contacts are associated with a potential divider comprising resistances 56, 58. In Fig. 2 the firing of the spark plug takes place upon opening of the breaker contacts when the breaker contacts open the energy stored in the choke coil 76 discharges into the capacitor 80 and the potential of the junction 72 becomes negative with respect to earth. The values of the resistor 70, choke coil 76 and capacitor 80 are chosen so that it will be possible to turn the controlled rectifier completely off.
