Abstract

850,402. Sparking plugs. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., J. Dec. 11, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 38996/57. Class 7(4). The invention relates to sparking plugs of the kind in which the spark discharge occurs in part over a path provided on the insulator a which carries the high tension electrode b and in part across an annular or part annular gap g between the insulator and an earthed electrode on the metal body of the plug. An annular gas pocket e is formed between the insulator and the body at the interior side of the air gap. According to the invention a by-pass h is provided through which gas can flow freely between the engine cylinder and the pocket in the plug and so minimise gas flow through the spark gap. Several forms of by-pass passages are disclosed. Fig 6 shows a modification in which a plurality of electrodes n form a part annular gap g.
