An overcharging earth electrode 6 with a free end of substantially rectangular or other elongated cross section, defines, between one of its narrower sides 6b at its free end and the end face of the tip of the central electrode 5, a spark gap, the shortest dimension of which is entirely in the axial direction of the central electrode so that the earth electrode offers the minimum screen to the central electrode from the flame of the combustion chamber.
