Abstract

900,414. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 27, 1961 [May 2, 1960], No. 15191/61. Class 7(4) A sparking plug for gas turbines and the like has a ceramic insulator 4 with a centre-bore stepped to form an internal annular shoulder 14, a centre electrode 6 with an enlarged end portion 8 which abuts the end of the insulator at the smaller diameter portion of the centre bore and a reduced diameter portion 16 located adjacent the shoulder; and an annular metal gasket 20 the inner and outer peripheral portions of which respectively engage the reduced diameter portion of the centre electrode and the larger diameter portion of the centrebore so as to secure the centre electrode in the centrebore. An annular mass of glass 22 is bonded to the insulator and to the centre electrode to form an hermetic seal therebetween. An upper portion of the centre electrode may be of metal having a coefficient of expansion substantially the same as that of the glass. The composition of the alloys from which the centre electrode may be made and of a suitable glass for the seal are quoted in the Specification.
