651,093. Sparking plugs. SMITSVONK, N. V. Oct. 25, 1948, No. 27741. Convention date, Sept. 20. [Class 7(iv)] [Also in Group XII] A combustion chambe: having an air-jacketed flame tube has the fuel ig nited by a creeping-spark spark plug operating directly on the charging or discharging of a condense which is mounted in both the outer casing and the flame tube wall in a gas-tight manner. The creeping-spark spark plug, Fig. 3, consists of a relatively thick centre electrode 16, a thin insulating or semi-conductive layer 17 and a tubular outer electrode 18. The igniting sparks are produced at 19 across the free-end of the separating material 17. The plug is screwed into the outer casing 1 and engages the flame tube wall in a fluid-tight manner by means of a shoulder 20 and packing washer 21. In a modification, the end of the spark plug is conically shaped and engages a conical hole in the inner wall 2. In a further modification, the plug is screwed into the inner wall 2 and engages the outer wall 1 by means of a flange and packing material. The outer electrode 18 may be provided with fins for cooling purposes. Specification 587,564 is referred to.
