765,175. Torch igniters. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., COUPE, N. P., and BELL. F. R. Jan. 26, 1955, No. 2393/55. Class 75(3) [Also in Group XII] In a turbine engine having an annular combustion chamber, a torch igniter of the type which obtains its combustion air from the main engine supply is disposed across a combustion air annulus to terminate between the inner wall 3 of the annulus and the perforate outer wall 4 of the combustion chamber. The outer wall of the air annulus consists of the outer casing 1 of the engine and the air is supplied by a compressor 2. The torch igniter comprises an inner tube 12 conveying liquid fuel and an outer tube 8 insulated from the inner tube by a block 13 of insulating material. The part of the outer tube 8 located in the air annulus has an air inlet 9 and the inner end of the outer tube 8 has apertures 10 and supports a conical member 11 on which impinges a jet of liquid fuel from an orifice at the end of the inner tube 12. Electric sparks pass between the ends of the inner and outer tubes to ignite the torch The torch flames enter the combustion chamber through apertures 5 in the outer wall 4 thereof and ignite the fuel issuing from a rotating orifice.
