Abstract

577,972. Liquid-fuel burners. WHITTLE, F. Dec. 9, 1939, No. 31884. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] Liquid fuel is burnt in a plurality of combustion chambers supplied with air and fuel in parallel, each chamber comprising an air casing surrounding a flame tube and neighbouring casings and tubes being interconnected, and fuel is supplied to each tube from a common source through means rendering uniform the supply as between neighbouring tubes. The application to water heating and steam generators is referred to. The figure shows the application to the jet propulsion power unit described in Specification 577,971, [Group XXVI]. The air casings 1 are supplied with compressed air through bell-mouthed parts 3A and are interconnected by pipes 1A. The flame tubes 4 are interconnected by pipes 48 and each tube surrounds a cluster of fuel pipes 11 connected to an equalising chamber 12 to which fuel is fed under pressure by pipe 13. A gauze strainer 12A is fitted in the chamber and a nipple with a small orifice 11B is screwed on to each pipe 11 to prevent surging. The fuel pipes are bent back to form vaporizers and terminate in jets 11A. A central pilot jet 5, which is an atomizing spray jet is fitted to each air casing and is surrounded by a co-axial baffle systems 8, 9 provided with sets of oppositely handed swirl vanes 8A, 9A. Air enter the flame tubes through the baffle systems and perforations 4C in the tubes and the combustion products leave by ducts 5. A sparking plug 6 is provided for ignition. As all chambers are interconnected one plug is sufficient for igniting a closed ring-like series of ten chambers. The fuel supply to each combustion chambered may be metered by valve means described in Specification 577,132, [Group XXIX].
