660,775. Lighting vapour burners. WILLIAMS, F. D. M. Dec. 15, 1949 [Dec. 24, 1948], No. 32183/49. Classes 75(i) and 75(iii) Combustion and ignition apparatus for a gas turbine engine comprises a fuel injector head 9, Fig. 1, located at the upstream end of a flame tube 6, and including an igniter jet 11, Fig. 3, whereby an igniting flame may be directed substantially along the longitudinal axis of the flame tube 6 and applied to longitudinally extending vaporizing tubes 7, each having an inlet exposed to the air stream through the combustion chamber and an outlet end discharging into the flame tube 6, an igniter 13 situated in front of the jet 11, and a plurality of fuel supply jets 10 arranged around the jet 11 and directed into the inlet ends of the vaporizing tubes 7. The jet 11 is of an atomizing type and is supplied with fuel through a pipe 16 extending coaxially through a pipe 18 which supplies the jets 10. The igniter comprises a sparking electrode 12 mounted directly on the head 9 and a sparking electrode 13 connected by a high-tension lead through a tube 14 to a terminal mounted outside the combustion chamber.. When combustion has been established the current to the igniter is switched off and the fuel supply to the igniter jet 11 is discontinued.
