Abstract
736,483. Sparking plugs. GENERA MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 195 [Nov. 21, 1952], No. 32263/53. Class 7(4 [Also in Group XI] In an igniter device for a combustion system of a gas turbine engine, air under pressure is supplied through an opening 15 into the hollow body 2 of the device, which is adapted to extend at one end 6 through the wall of a combustion chamber, and may be formed with a venturi passage 7, and which has a circumferential channel 19 receiving liquid fuel which is discharged from nozzles 28, 30 and ignited by sparks passing between bifurcations 80, 82 of a sparking electrode 76 and a surrounding metal sleeve 48. The latter becomes heated by the burning fuel and the lower edge thereof is maintained at a temperature sufficient to ensure continuous ignition of the fuel so that the sparking may be discontinued when the flame is established. The fuel discharged from the nozzles 28, 30 is atomized by impingement on surfaces 44, 46 of baffle pins 40, 42, respectively. The sparking electrode 76 is mounted in a ceramic insulator 54 and is sealed in position by fused glass and metal powder 78 into which is also sealed a screw 81 carrying a contact 86 electrically connected, through a spring 96 and a contact 94, with the electric supply cable 92. The fuel is supplied through an inlet 128 containing a non-return valve 124, and passes through a filter 114 and a pipe 16 into..an annular groove 18 in the wall of the venturi passage 7, and thence through a narrow gap 160 into the annular channel 19 which contains a filter 24. The non-return valve 124 ensures that fuel is discharged through the nozzles 28, 30 under pressure so that dripping is minimized.
