Abstract

5210. Hopps, B. March 3. Sparking-plugs.-A vitreous material such as glass or enamel is used to form a gas-tight joint between the outer casing of the plug and the insulation or the inner terminal. The inner terminal 7 is, as shown in Fig. 2, surrounded by a porcelain insulator 2, the enamel 6 adhering to the insulator and the outer casing 1. The inner terminal is held in position by a nut sunk into, or resting on the top of, the insulator. Enamel is run into the space around the nut, and adheres to the terminal and insulator. Asbestos pads are provided between the insulator and the inner terminal and outer casing. In a modification, the insulator does not extend the whole length of the inner terminal, the enamel 6, Fig. 3, reaching from the terminal to the casing; the enamel does not adhere to the terminal, which may be removable. In a further modification, the bottom part of the insulator is replaced by enamel.
