Abstract

1,175,917. Spark plugs; ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Nov. 15, 1968 [Dec. 1, 1967], No.54379/68. Heading F1B. A spark plug has a body 20 of semi-conductor material having a bore in which is located a centre electrode 24 which is electrically insulated from the body 12 and the earth electrode 14. The firing tip 28 of the centre electrode forms with the body 20 a trigger gap such that trigger gap arcing ionizes gas in the main gap. The semi-conductor material should have a resistivity of 10<SP>5</SP> to 10<SP>6</SP> ohms/centimetre at 3000 volts. The ignition coil may have a 30 to 1 turn ratio and deliver about 8 kv.
