Abstract

1,215,082. Sparking plugs. OKAMURA MFG. CO. Ltd. and K. TERAO. Jan.26, 1968. No.4198/68. Heading F1B. A wide gap discharge spark plug comprises a first electrode 1 provided with insulation means 2 of uniform thickness intermediate the plug body and a free uninsulated end of the electrode, the other electrode 4 extending towards the insulated portion of the first electrode so that its tip 6 is the portion closest to the first electrode and is in spaced relation to the insulating means 2. The arrangement is such that the distance of the tip of the second electrode from the first electrode measured directly through the insulating means is less than the distance of the spark gap between the uninsulated ends of the electrodes whereby upon energization of the electrode an intense electric field is generated between the tip of the second electrode and the insultation means to promote ionization of a gas mixture in the region of the spark gap. Modified arrangements of the electrodes are discribed.
