Abstract

964,817. Protective arrangements. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Jan. 30, 1963 [Feb. 21, 1962], No. 6744/62. Heading H2K. An arrangement for protecting against an open circuit condition of an electric heating element 10, 11, e.g. of an electric blanket, comprises two or more gas discharge tubes 15, 16 each connected across a section of the element and having a breakdown voltage higher than the normal voltage across that section. If a section becomes open-circuited, the voltage across the associated tube increases, causing it to strike. This results in an increased voltage across the other tube or tubes causing it or them to strike, so forming a low impedance path across the supply to the element. The current through this path blows a fuse 14 to open the supply circuit to the element. Specification 964,818 is referred to.
