1,082,397. Surgical apparatus for crushing stones. O. G. BALAEV, J. G. EDINY, and N. A. KOROL. April 1, 1965, No. 13822/65. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for crushing stones in the bladder includes a lithotrite comprising a central electrode 9 insulated from a co-axial outer electrode 8, and the apparatus may also include a cystoscope 22 through an opening in which the lithotrite is inserted, and an electric pulse generator 1 providing sparks and shock waves at the electrodes to destroy the stones. The ends of the electrodes are (as shown) in the same plane, or in another embodiment (Figure 3, not shown) the central electrode 9 projects beyond the electrode 8. The pulse generator includes adjustable pulse discharge gaps 6, 7 between cylinders of tungsten and the generator is switched on by a relay 33 and foot-switch 32, the relay being connected, together with the cystoscope lamp 21, to a clamp 27 and earthed busbar 30, so that a poor contact at the busbar renders the apparatus inoperative.
