Abstract
1,040,677. Arc furnaces. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 16, 1965, No. 25484/65. Addition to 1,001,132. Heading H5H. A single or multiple phase arc furnace has means for reducing voltage fluctuations in the mains supply comprising graphite shields 3, 14 (Figures, not shown) surrounding an electrode 1 and means for passing cooling gas, e.g. argon, between the shields and between the electrode 1 and shield 3. The shields are electrically insulated from the electrode or may be of insulating material. The positions of the shields are adjustable and they may be maintained in the optimum position relative to the electrode, automatically. Further gas-cooled shields may be added.
