Abstract

1,113,448. Arc furnaces. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. 31 May, 1965 [15 June, 1964], No. 23008/65. Heading H2H. In an arc furnace having water-cooled gas nozzles 35 &c. surrounding the tungsten electrodes 23 &c., the nozzles are connected to the supply through a silicon rectifier to carry reverse half-cycles of the current. An oppositely poled rectifier may be connected in series with the electrodes. The arrangement may be used with poly or single phase current and the furnace may have a submersed electrode M.
