Abstract

1,100,211. Arc torches. C. SHEER and S. KORMAN. 26 April, 1965, No 17571/65. Heading H5H. High energy is imparted to a fluid passed through a porous anode by maintaining a high intensity current through the fluid between the anode and a cathode. A plasma generator comprises a cylindrical cathode 14 of graphite or tungsten and an anode in the form of a porous carbon plug 11 mounted in a tube 10 having an inner tube 12 through which plasma material flows, a portion transpiring through the plug, the remainder returning through the annular space between the tubes thereby cooling the plug. In another embodiment, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), the tube is divided into three passages by lateral walls (21), (22), cooling fluid passing up and down the outer passages and through connecting passages (23) in the plug. The plug may be conical, Fig. 5 (not shown), and mounted in a water cooled casing (32) from which it is electrically insulated. In operation the current is adjusted so that the arc covers the entire exposed surface of the plug.
