Abstract
1380966 Plasma torches ELECTRICITY COUNCIL and G T DYOS 20 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8302/72 Heading B3V [Also in Division H5] The plasma constricting tube of a plasma arc torch is formed in a porous body 18 and is cooled by water forced through the pores from annular chamber 20 to evaporate on the walls of the tube. The conventional water-cooled cathode 15 may be positioned in a tapered water-cooled chamber as shown or in an enlarged water-cooled chamber (Fig. 2, not shown) with replaceable pieces (176) guiding the plasma so that the size of the constrictor tube may be altered at will. The porous body 18 is of ceramic material or sintered metal with pore sizes between 1.5 and 1500 microns.
